The pair went missing near the town of Montecatini Val di Cecina, south of Pisa.
Search efforts involving divers, rescue dogs and drones were underway on Tuesday, but operations were made difficult by severe weather, as well as by the area’s rugged terrain, Italian media reported.
The baby’s parents and grandfather were rescued from the rooftop of their holiday home after the area was hit by sudden flooding overnight.
Francesco Auriemma, the mayor of Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, told AFP that the family was from Germany.

Flash floods followed hours of torrential rain, which caused the Sterza river to break its banks in multiple sections.
Auriemma told Il Corriere della Sera: “According to accounts from [rescue] volunteers, the child slipped out of the grandmother’s arms. The woman was then swept away by the water while trying to hold onto the baby.”
Nicola Ciannelli, the commander of Pisa’s fire department, said the house the family stayed in was hit by a 2.5-metre-high “flood wave”.
“Three family members managed to save themselves by clinging to the pillars of a porch […] while the grandmother and her 5-month-old grandson were carried away,” he added.
Torrential rain across the Tuscany region led to the closure of some roads in Categneto Carducci, in the province of Livorno, and temporarily left around 700 homes without electricity on Monday evening, Tuscany president Eugenio Giani said in a Facebook post.
Flooding in Tuscany came after large parts of the northeastern Emilia Romagna region experienced devastating flash floods last week, with local authorities forced to evacuate over 1,000 people from their homes.
Eight people died in Tuscany in November 2023 after Storm Ciaran caused multiple rivers around the region to burst their banks, leading to widespread flooding.
