Robin Söderling followed his doubles success on Saturday with a straight sets win in the singles over Victor Hansescu. Andreas Vinciguerra was forced to forfeit his match with Marius Copil after winning the first set 6-4.
“It feels great. An incredibly important match which we just had to win. Losing just wasn’t an option, so it feels great.
Robin Söderling, with Robin Lindstedt, had secured Swedish success in the tie on Saturday with a straight sets, 6-1,7-6,7-6 win over Victor Hanescu and Horia Tecau.
Until then Sweden had been at risk of being degraded from the so-called elite division for only the second time in the tournament’s history.
US Open semi-finalist Söderling also claimed victory in his singles match against Victor Crivoi on Friday and thereby stood for all of Sweden’s points in the tie.
