“The World Child and Youth Forum will inspire and support to ensure the survival of the UN Convention on the Right’s of the Child. We hope that the first forum can be held in Stockholm at the end of next year,” he said during the speech, which was broadcast on Swedish Radio.
The king described the forum as a “shared dream” that he and Queen Silvia have fostered following trips abroad where they have witnessed the poverty and unjustice that many children are exposed to. King Carl also said he has been inspired by charity organisations and the scout movement, which he is also involved with.
“Parenthood also means that your commitment to other children and youth grows. We feel that with our status comes a duty to try to contribute to improving the conditions for children and youth across Sweden and in the world,” he said.
The king also commented upon the upcoming nuptials of his daughters, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine.
“Marrying the love of your life was not always an obvious option when I was growing up. I am therefore unbelievably happy that my daughters, as did I, have the people whom they love the most at their sides. I want to offer a huge and humble thank you to all of the support and encouragement that we have received from the Swedish people,” he said.
The speech was held at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.
