SAP said in addition to wanting to reduce its own carbon footprint, the company sees economic potential in the rapidly developing sector.
“This is a huge market for SAP,” co-CEO Jim Hagemann Snabe said on Friday at the introduction of the pilot project.
The company, based in Walldorf, Germany, also plans on adding 30 electric cars to its company car fleet, which will be powered exclusively by electricity generated from renewable sources.
For the project, SAP has partnered with the Mannheim-based energy company MVV Energie, the Öko-Insitute, the Institute for Social-Ecological Research and the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences.
The project is also supported by Germany’s Environment Ministry.
