The 23-year-old Berger’s bizarre piece of stick-work in a late-September Swiss league game sparked much mirth across the continent as news of his deft finish filtered into the Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish and Slovakian news media.
“I guess I had a temporary flashback,” Berger told Swiss newspaper Blick on netting for his former teammates.
On the ice against his previous club, the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, the Flyers defenceman sent a blistering shot past his stunned goaltender and into the net, tying the game at 3-3.
The Kloten player explained that he had intended to clear the puck but got his angles all wrong and instead sent what look like a pin-point shot zipping into the wrong goal.
“The first thing I thought was: this can’t be happening,” Bergen told newspaper 20 Minuten after the game.
Fortunately for Berger, the Flyers bagged a late winner to spare his blushes.
