The tragedy occurred in a cemetery in Härryda, some 20 kilometres east of Gothenburg, early on Sunday afternoon.
Although details are somewhat unclear, she was apparently visiting the graveyard when the head stone fell on her.
The youngster was immediately rushed to the nearby Södra Älvsborgs hospital in Borås shortly before 2pm.
“A little girl has been struck by a gravestone on her head. It does not look promising,” said Gothenburg police spokesman Thomas Fuxborg when the girl was taken to the hospital.
Shortly afterwards however, authorities at the hospital announced that she had not recovered and pronounced her dead
Meanwhile the police are looking further into the cause of the accident. The cemetery has been cordoned off while they try to establish more details.
“We have closed off the place where the accident happened while we wait to see whether we will carry out an investigation. What we do know is that a stone has fallen, but we do not know why,” said Fuxborg.
He added that the girl had been with relatives at the time of the accident and that they were waiting to speak with her mother, who was with her at the time of the incident, at the hospital.
