The tone of the presidential campaign in France is growing more vicious as candidates prepare for the second round of the elections next week.
At a rally for Sarkozy, rightwing lawmaker Lionnel Luca referred to Hollande’s partner Valerie Trierweiler as “Rottweiler”.
Speaking on public television on Thursday, Sarkozy condemned the comments.
“I condemn those comments, I have nothing to do with them and I am even prepared to tell Valerie Trierweiler that I am sorry if she was hurt.”
Sarkozy moved on to say he would hate it if anybody insulted his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
Over the past couples of days, Hollande and Sarkozy have traded insults over allegations French mosques were calling on believers to vote Socialist.
Sarkozy has accused Hollande of being backed by a controversial Muslim intellectual Tariq Ramadan. The leftwing candidate has hit back saying Sarkozy was lying and deliberately trying to confuse voters.
