Many quotes about Germany concern the German language. Mark Twain wrote an entire appendix to his book A Tramp Abroad just about “That Awful German Language”. He did not stop there, with wonderfully cutting comments about them in his Notebook.
When putting this list together we were sorely tempted to include only Twain quotes. Try this one: “I never knew before what eternity was made for. It is to give some of us a chance to learn German.”
And this, from A Tramp Abroad: “It’s awful undermining to the intellect, German is; you want to take it in small doses, or first you know your brains all run together, and you feel them flapping around in your head same as so much drawn butter.”
We’ve just put one Twain quote in our list. Can you guess who the others are going to be? Find out in this week’s list.
