According to Billboard Magazine, the song debuted on the chart on Thursday as the third most streamed song, a performance that has only been topped by Baauer's "Harlem Shake", PSY's "Gentleman", and One Direction's "Best Song Ever".
The magazine said that the song had been seen 4.8 million times on Youtube in the US, and 17.8 million times globally.
Vegard and Bård Ylvisåker launched the song last week to market their talk-show "Tonight With Ylvis".
The song's meteoric rise is perhaps not that much of a surprise, however, given who is behind it.
The song was produced by New York-based Norwegian producers Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, who as Stargate have had a succession of Billboard Number One singles, including So Sick by Ne-Yo, Irreplaceable by Beyoncé and Rihanna's Diamonds and Only Girl in the World.
Ylvis previously achieved viral status with "Stonehenge," which got 1.3 million YouTube views in 2011.
