As customers in a bookshop in Malmö tried to stop him on Tuesday night, the man pushed them away, telling them that the book had to be burnt because Knausgård's writing was so bad.
"He was too drunk to be interviewed," police told the local Sydsvenskan newspaper . "When he was arrested, he not only had comments about the author's qualities, but also about the establishment in general, to say the very least."
Police said on Tuesday night that they remained unsure how to treat the man, as the bookshop had declined to press charges, and, as the book fell onto a concrete floor, no damage had been done.
The offending book was the fourth instalment of Knausgård's six-part Proustian autobiography, which has been lauded across the world.
Knausgård lives in southern Sweden with his Swedish wife Linda Boström Knausgård.
