Norway is the most successful nation in winter Olympic history, both in terms of total medals won and gold medals won. And apart from cross-country star Petter Northug, who has battled to recover fitness after being hit by a virus last year, this year the team looked as strong as ever.
But in the event, the country's sportsmen have all by-and-large put in distinctly sub-par performances, spurring a spate of national hand-wringing and debate.
Have suppliers been secretly doling out new high-tech wax to Norway's rivals, as the team's wax technician suggested on Monday? Are skiers from Norway, with the country's colder, longer winters, simply less well-prepared than their rivals for the sort of sludgy snow conditions seen at Sochi? Have the country's Olympians simply got arrogant and lazy?
