Most golfers are familiar with birdies and eagles, but in a new avian twist as reported on Wednesday on OE24, a golfer spotted a 'Vogelspinne' – known in German as a 'bird spider'.
She immediately alerted an employee of the club, who collected the spider in a bucket, and passed it on to an animal rescue group.
As tarantulas are not normally native to Austria, but reside in the sub-tropical regions, it is suspected this specimen had escaped from a collector.
A bite from a tarantula, while painful, is generally not fatal to human beings, unless they are allergic.
According to a report on the Austrian state broadcaster ORF, the woman was not sufficiently frightened of the spider to consider ending her golf game, so she played on.
