The square, which is located between the Mariahilfer Strasse and the Volkstheater, has already had a symbolic renaming, by members of the Austrian group SADOCC (South African Documentation and Cooperation Centre).
A press release from SADOCC said that many streets and squares across Europe had been named after Mandela, as a way of remembering his achievements in the struggle against apartheid. The proposed square in Vienna would be a prominent and easily accessible place of remembrance, it said.
SADOCC called on all factions of the city council to agree to the plan as soon as possible.
A similar proposal stirred controversy in Germany in 2013.
