A fire at the Experimentarium has left the popular suburban Copenhagen science centre “more or less completely destroyed”, police said on Monday night.

The Experimentarium’s permanent location in Hellerup was undergoing renovations when a fire broke out on its roof Monday evening.

Two construction workers were slightly injured in the fire, the exact cause of which has not been determined.

Although the Experimentarium’s personnel and exhibits had been moved to a temporary location on Copenhagen’s Paper Island (Papirøen) during renovations, the extent of the fire may mean that they will never move back.

“The fire spread a lot. A large part of the Experimentarium is destroyed and burnt down. There is extensive damage to large sections of the the building. More or less, it is completely destroyed,” North Zealand Police spokesman Ulrik Lindén told Politiken.

He added that the Copenhagen Fire Brigade was considering tearing down a section of the building.

The science centre’s director, Kim Herlev, said he would hold off on making any statements about the facility’s future until the situation became clearer.

“We hadn’t really started building the Experimentarium. So the fire has mostly affected the old building and there is just a little bit of that that will be part of the new one. I will have a better overview [on Tuesday], but it isn’t so terrible since we hadn’t gotten so far yet,” Herlev told Politiken.

The Copenhagen area science enter Experimentarium caught fire on Monday, injuring two people and spreading to surrounding buildings.
