Norwegians traditionally wear they folk costumes, or bunad, for the national day celebrations, and most bunad are adorned with multiple metal buckles, buttons, jewellery, and even knives, which have in previous years led to significant delays at airport security.
Joachim Westher Andersen, a press officer at Oslo airport, told Norway’s Aftenposten newspaper that Bunad knives in particular needed to be checked in.
“Buckles, buttons and jewellery will set the metal detectors off,” he told the newspaper. “Collect costume jewellery in a jewellery pouch or box, show it to security personnel and tell them if you have a Bunad in your hand luggage.”
When the airport trialled the idea last year, it successfully reduced the bunad bottlenecks.
