‘Don’t have one night stands during pandemic’: Norwegian health minister

Minister of Health Bent Høie has encouraged young people to forego casual sex during the coronavirus pandemic, with infection rates currently relatively high within the age group.

Høie’s comments were made in response to a podcast by newspaper VG in which a number of young people said they had casual sex since the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, despite recommendations to stick to a single partner.

“Sex is important, and I understand it’s difficult for people without a steady partner,” he told the newspaper, but nevertheless warned against casual encounters, since they risk increasing the spread of Covid-19.

“(Younger people) often have mild symptoms and can therefore infect others without knowing,” Høie told VG.

A YouGov survey on behalf of the paper recently found that 16 percent of people between the ages of 20 and 25  in Norway said they had broken coronavirus guidelines by having a one night stand.

An increase in coronavirus infections in Norway in recent weeks – while less severe than that seen in other European countries – has been reported to be most prominent in people in their twenties.
