17 injured in motorway pile-up in southern Sweden

Seventeen people were injured in multi-vehicle collision on the E6 motorway between Malmö and Helsingborg on Wednesday evening.

At least seven were taken to hospital and three of them – two adults and a child – were initially described as fighting for their lives. However, in the early hours of Thursday police confirmed that their status had improved and their injuries were no longer life-threatening.

Three cars and a truck were involved in the accident, according to police, but it was not immediately clear what caused it.

Nine ambulances and nine fire engines were called out to the scene, reports public broadcaster SVT.

King declares landslide-hit motorway fit for use

Further north on the E6, King Carl XVI Gustaf reopened the motorway at Stenungsund, where the road has been closed to traffic since it was destroyed in a massive landslide in September last year.

“Thankfully, no one died in the disaster,” said the King as he declared the motorway fit for use. Instead of cutting a ribbon, he got into a car and drove 400 metres on the newly asphalted section as national and local politicians, construction bosses and the press looked on.

The motorway is set to reopen to the public on Friday, and Stenungsund mayor Olof Lundberg was pleased.

“You have to give the Swedish Transport Administration credit this time for having worked as fast as they could. It’s a huge relief that the E6 is being reopened much earlier than they originally said,” he was quoted by Swedish news agency TT as saying.

Residents of the village of Ucklum, through which traffic has been rerouted during the closure, are also said to be relieved. The E6 is an important link between Sweden and Norway and is used by a lot of cars and heavy trucks.

SJ halts trains between Malmö and Copenhagen this summer

Swedish train operator SJ won’t run any trains between Malmö and Copenhagen between July 3rd and August 4th due to a shortage of trains, reports regional newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad (HD)

More than 20,000 travellers are expected to be affected, and will now instead have to travel between Sweden and Denmark on the regional Öresund trains. They will still be able to use their already purchased SJ tickets, however.

It’s unclear how crowded the Öresund trains will get during the summer, with bosses at public transport operator Skånetrafiken saying that the trains have a lot of capacity so it shouldn’t be too noticeable, and train staff telling HD that trains are already full as things stand.

Northvolt warns work permit salary threshold could jeopardise Sweden’s green transition

Sweden’s minimum salary threshold for work permits has increased by almost 120 percent in less than a year, and there are plans to increase it again to the median salary next summer.

Battery manufacturers Northvolt warns that this could stop the company from hiring and retaining key workers.

“Northvolt’s extensive labour requirements in northern Sweden cannot currently be met by permanently established workers in Sweden or within the EU,” the company wrote in a response to the government’s proposal to raise the salary threshold to the median salary, currently 35,600 kronor.

“This applies in particular to machine operators and technicians, whose minimum wages under collective bargaining agreements are lower than the median wage, and therefore are particularly vulnerable in this context.”

Swedish vocabulary: to hire – att anställa

Man shot dead in Gothenburg

A man in his mid-20s was shot dead in the Bagaregården area of Gothenburg late on Thursday.

He was found outside after members of the public heard the bangs, and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

At around 11pm police reported he had died of his injuries.

There were no suspects early on Friday morning.

Sweden is seeing much less gun violence than last year, with 17 people killed in shootings and 22 injured according to figures from June 19th. A total of 105 shootings were recorded in Sweden in the first five months of the year, down 30 percent on the same period last year.

Growing probability of Swedish interest rate cut next month

The chances that Sweden’s central bank, the Riksbank, will cut interest rates in August have grown slightly, according to banking giant SEB’s latest roundup of market rates. The probability now stands at 84 percent, compared to 80 percent a week ago.

The Riksbank’s own interest rate forecast from June has the probability at 76 percent. It said last week that it expects to cut the country’s main interest rate – the so-called policy rate – another two to three times this year, which would mean a cut in either August or September.

The Riksbank last cut the policy rate to 3.75 percent in May, the first cut in eight years.

The policy rate is the bank’s main monetary policy tool. It decides which rates Swedish banks can deposit in and borrow money from the Riksbank, which in turn affects the banks’ own interest rates on savings, loans and mortgages.

If bank interest rates are high, it’s expensive to borrow money, which means people spend less and as a result inflation drops.

If mortgages were to drop 0.75 percentage points, a household with a three million kronor mortgage would see their costs drop by 22,500 kronor per year, according to the TT newswire (although how immediate the impact is depends on whether they have a variable or fixed mortgage).

Three Swedes sentenced to death in Iraq over shooting

The Swedish government said Thursday that three of its citizens had been sentenced to death in Iraq for “involvement in a shooting”, and said it would summon Baghdad’s envoy over the matter.

Sweden’s Iraq embassy, whose activities are temporarily being managed from Stockholm, “has received confirmation from local authorities that a total of three Swedish citizens have been sentenced to death in Iraq”, the foreign ministry said.

It did not provide details on the shooting incident, but said it had summoned Iraq’s ambassador to Sweden to protest the rulings and demand the sentences not be carried out, reported the AFP news agency.

“We are taking steps to prevent their enforcement,” the ministry said in a statement.

Swedish vocabulary: summon – kalla upp / kalla till sig

Swedish diplomat recalls darkest hours in Iran prison

After almost 800 days in Iran’s notorious Evin prison, the now-free Swedish diplomat Johan Floderus in an interview with AFP recalled the darkest moments throughout his imprisonment and how he survived them.

Released in mid-June, Floderus and another Swedish citizen were part of a prisoner exchange that saw a former prison official return to Iran.

When asked how he has been since gaining his freedom, Floderus smiled while choosing his words carefully.

“I’m doing well. My family has done everything to give me the sort of soft landing that I think I really needed upon my return,” he told AFP.

Floderus was released together with fellow Swede Saeed Azizi. Ahmadreza Djalali, a Swedish-Iranian researcher, remains imprisoned in Iran.
