Presenter Ben McPartland is joined by The Local France’s Emma Pearson and John Lichfield, in a special episode recorded on Sunday night just after the results came in for France’s snap elections – ushering in a shock victory for the left alliance.

After all pollsters predicted that Marine Le Pen’s far right group would be the biggest party, in fact it was the left alliance Nouveau Front Populaire which came first, with the far-right group pushed into third place by Emmanuel Macron’s centrist group.

The defeat of the far-right was strongly influenced by the ‘Republican Front’ – in which parties agreed to withdraw candidates in certain key seats and voters used their vote to block the far-right in their local constituency.

But the result is far from simple – although the left alliance has the largest number of seats it does not have a majority. The likely result will be a deadlocked parliament and a chaotic political scene.

The developments of this week will be crucial, especially the key question of who will be France’s next prime minister.

Talking France will return with a full-length episode on Thursday, looking at the latest progress in that attempt to build a government.

TALKING FRANCE

PODCAST: How long will France’s new PM last and what will the Paris Olympics legacy be?

The Talking France podcast is back after its - extended - summer break and this week is looking at what on earth is going on with France's government, what now for Paris after the Olympics and Paralympics and all the changes on the horizon in September.

PODCAST: How long will France's new PM last and what will the Paris Olympics legacy be?

The Talking France podcast has been on its summer break, and when we signed off in July we blithely said “we’ll see you in September when France should have a government”.

Well. It’s September, the Talking France podcast – with host Ben McPartland joined by The Local’s Emma Pearson, Genevieve Mansfield and John Lichfield – is back, but as for the new government things are a little less clear-cut.

We take a look at France’s new prime minister Michel Barnier and his political views, plus his big challenge of putting together a government that might survive the next few weeks and put together the crucial 2025 budget.

This summer has been a magical one in Paris as the French capital hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Games – we look back at some of our favourite memories and forward to what happens now, from the fate of the Olympic rings and that silver ‘ghost’ horse from the opening ceremony to more long-term projects like finally making the Paris Metro fully accessible.

And Emma talks about what she has been doing for the past three weeks and why it’s her fault that the podcast is late returning.

The Games might be over, but there are plenty of things happening in France in September – from some travel changes and sales to the best festivals and things to do over the next month.
