Magdeburg FC have scored just 16 goals in their 25 matches this season, 11 fewer than Energie Cottbus II, the team second from bottom in the league.
Their latest dry spell had lasted for five games before Sunday’s encounter with Berliner AK 07, so disgruntled fans decided to take action.
Beneath a banner emblazoned with the helpful notice “we will show you where the goal is,” the Magdeburgers held aloft brightly-coloured arrows and pointed them at the opposition goal.
And it did the trick – Christopher Wright, Magdeburg’s US attacker, proved he was well capable of following orange and yellow arrows, and slammed in a cracking header from a corner in the 78th minute.
But next time fans might need some extra arrows to point out the positions of opposition strikers. Despite Wright’s efforts, Magdeburg still managed to lose 2-1 – it was their 12th match in a row without a win.
