Many languages have phrases, sayings and rules of thumb concerning weather and seasons, but few can be as irritating when fighting an inside-out umbrella in the wind as April macht was er will – April does what it likes.
This cute little saying does nothing to brighten up a grumpy Tuesday which started with sunshine, creating irresistible temptation to leave the hat and scarf at home – and which then proceeded in a flash to turn to sleet.
Even keen gardeners can find it difficult to crack a smile when some smart German says Aprilschnee bringt Gras und Klee – April snow brings grass and clover. This does not compensate for having wet socks – again.
