A staunch opponent of German reunification, Thatcher had hoped the Soviets and French would help her halt what in hindsight seems to be the inevitable march of history.
She couldn’t stand Helmut Kohl either, feeling the former German chancellor had gotten too big for his britches after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989.
“Kohl is capable of anything. He has become a different man. He does not know who he is anymore. He sees himself as the master and is starting to act like it,” Thatcher said at the time, according to a French diplomatic memo released years later.
In memory of the Iron Lady, we’ve collected her memorable statements about the Germans for this week’s Local List.
