As reported in the Tiroler Tageszeitung newspaper, Innsbruck city has banned alcohol consumption from midnight Tuesday in three main areas – the pedestrian zone of Maria-Theresien-Straße, the whole of Bozner Platz, and the Innrain bus terminal.
So-called 'Gastgärten', or designated seating areas in outdoor cafes and restaurants are excluded from the new regulation.
The council is seeking to curb boulevard drinking, and the associated public nuisance that often accompanies it.
The Socialist (SPÖ) and Greens parties on the council believe the ban to be unconstitutional, and plan to begin court action for judicial review of its legality. The Greens party in particular believes that self-regulation is preferred.
