The study, by the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, Insee, shows among the 90 percent who feel they belong to the country in which they were born, 67 percent feel they are regarded as being French.
More than one quarter of those asked, 27 percent, claimed they had been discriminated against because of their heritage.
Some 14 percent believe they were treated poorly in school – for the rest of the population that figure is four percent.
In the employment market, 20 percent of those asked say they are over-qualified for their job.
The study also showed the descendants of immigrants are more highly educated than their parents – 38 percent have degrees, compared to 33 percent of the parents.
