Never before has a single bottle sold for such a large amount in Sweden.

“The bidding was very cautious up until the final minutes and seconds, then a lot happened very quickly,” Sören Nylund, head of valuations for state-owned alcohol retailer Systembolaget's auctions, said to news agency TT.

The whisky, a Macallan Lalique 60 Years, was distilled in 1950 and is part of a limited edition series of 400 bottles.

“There are fewer of them left year after year, so the demand and price are both rising,” said Sören Nylund.

The Scotch is described as tasting 'exclusive, intense and multi-dimensional'.

The previous sales record was also held by a Macallan – sold earlier this year for 216,000 kronor ($23,100).
