The incident took place around midnight last Friday during a hunting expedition in a wooded area in Mörlunda near Hultsfred.
According to police, the Danish hunter thought he saw some wild boar stride within range and fired off three shots.
But the hunter’s joy quickly turned to anguish when approached his kill and realized that, rather than boar, he had shot and killed a pair of 800 kilogramme Highland breed bulls which belonged to the landowner that organized the hunt.
The hunter quickly alerted the landowner and informed him of the mix up, prompting the landowner to in turn notify police.
“A Danish citizen has shot two bulls he thought were wild boars,” Kalmar County police spokesperson Christer Karlsson told the Expressen newspaper.
“You’d think you’d be able to see the difference.”
Karlsson added that wild boar rarely weigh more than 200 kilogrammes, “so the bulls were quite a bit larger”.
“It may have been dark out, and all, but he didn’t do such a great job,” he told Expressen.
The Danish hunter, who was determined to be sober at the time of the incident, is now suspected of having violated Swedish hunting laws.
