The painting by Charles Camoin, La Jeune Fille Au Foulard Rouge (the girl with the red scarf), dates from 1939, and was found by a fisherman in a bush by the banks of the river, who immediately gave it to the police.
An antique dealer from Lyon bought the painting in an auction at Christie’s, New York, in 2007 for $16,800. But the painting never got to the dealer’s home because the Fedex truck transporting the painting was burgled.
The painting will be returned to its rightful owner once he has been found by the authorities.
Camoin was born in 1879 in Marseilles, and was a contemporary of Henry Matisse at Gustave Moreau’s class at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
