Bus driver lock-out in northern Sweden

Veolia Transport has said it will lock out 67 bus drivers and conductors to coincide with the start of a bus strike in northern Sweden at midnight on Wednesday, Dagens Nyheter reports.

“We have to do this unfortunately when there’s a bus strike in Västerbotten,” company spokesman Mattias Näsström told Dagens Nyheter.

Veolia’s response to trade union Kommunal’s industrial action means that the striking workers will not be paid until further notice.

“It’s an unusual measure. But we can’t be stuck with wage costs when we’re unable to operate,” said Näsström.

Veolia operates a fleet of 40 buses along the Norrland coast. The company said it had no option but to discontinue its Sundsvall-Haparanda service for the duration of the strike.
