Acupuncturist to face charges for quackery

An acupuncturist in northern Sweden has been indicted under the act restricting medical quackery after having treated a baby for colic.

Only authorized health and hospital staff are permitted to treat children under the age of eight with acupuncture.

“I thought more with my heart than my head,” said the acupuncturist.

The baby received several acupuncture treatments for colic. A needle was placed between the baby’s thumb and index finger and rotated, without apparent discomfort to the baby, according the mother.

“The treatment helped,” she said.

The acupuncturist was reported to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) a year ago when the local health service heard about the treatment, writes local newspapers Sundsvalls Tidning and Dagbladet.
