“Human rights activists all over the world are protesting against the unsustainable situation that the Palestinians find themselves in,” the Red Party’s (Rødt) representative Ylva Holm Torsteinson said, the newspaper Avisa Oslo reports.
Rødt proposed the introduction of an annual flag day on which the Palestinian flag would be flown at the Oslo City Hall, but did not get a majority for its proposal.
However, there was a majority in favour of flying the flag on November 29 this year in connection with the UN’s International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
On several previous occasions, the majority in the City Council has voted in ways that show that Oslo Municipality does not normally engage in foreign policy.
“That argument is a diversion. As a municipality, we have an opportunity, right, and duty to express support for ethnic groups that are exposed to gross violations of international law,” Torsteinson said, according to Avisa Oslo.
