From October 1st, the cantonal fee for acquiring citizenship in Basel-City will be cut by half: from 300 francs currently to 150 francs, local authorities announced on Tuesday.
The naturalisation remains free of charge for people up to the age of 19.
The fees foreigners are charged for becoming Swiss through naturalisation can add up because of the complicated levels of bureaucracy in Switzerland from federal to cantonal and municipal.
So the overall cost of becoming Swiss depends very much on where you live. The good news here for foreigners living in Basel-City is that the cantonal fee will be halved.
Regarding the various fees from place to place, there was an attempt to bring these varying administrative costs in line across the country back in 2006.
However, this fell flat and the amount you pay is likely to differ depending on where you live.
The cost of filing an application with federal authorities is relatively low (100 Swiss francs for an adult, or 150 francs for a couple).
However, cantonal and communal/municipal authorities also charge non-refundable administrative fees which can seriously mount up.
